Monthly Event Series

Food & Wine Education Series

This series features a culinary partnership between Master Sommelier Patrick Okubo and Makena’s talented chefs. It is designed to pair the best of  our Chef’s fresh and cultured dishes with the best of old world and new world wines. The series will focus on various wines paired with dishes made with fresh local ingredients from local farms and companies. During each event our chef provides a cooking demonstration while Master Sommelier, Patrick Okubo educates on the wines chosen for each event. Each event will introduce a new theme with three wines and dish pairings. Past themes include: Poke & Sauvignon Blanc, Taste of Sonoma,  Taste of Australia, NE Italy and Gnocchi,  Lamb & Syrah, Spanish Wines & Tapas, Taste of Chile, Santa Barbara Wines and Taste of Napa. Event usually priced at $45 per person, plus tax and gratuity.

 

Master Sommelier Patrick Okubo

About Master Sommelier, Patrick Okubo

Patrick “Pat” Okubo is a Master Sommelier with the Court of Master Sommeliers, a Certified Wine Educator (CWE), and Certified Specialist of Spirits (CSS). A graduate of University High and the University of Hawaii, he is a member of the National Guard, runs The Wine GI, a personal wine consultation and education business, and is host of A Perfect Sip – an online radio show, www.aperfectsip.com. Pat is the Fine Wine Specialist and Wine Educator for Young’s Market Hawaii. Previously, he opened Formaggio Grill as Managing Partner and Wine Director / Restaurant manager at Four Seasons Lana’i. Pat is the third Master Sommelier in Hawaii and is the second youngest Master Sommelier in the nation.

 

Winery of the Month Series

Each month the Makena Beach & Golf Resort features a winery or vineyard in its dining outlets, offering three flight tastings and specials on the chosen winery’s wines. In addition, the resort holds a special Winery of the Month dinner, a five course meal designed by the resort’s chefs and paired with wine selections of the featured winery. These monthly wine dinners feature a special guest host from the chosen winery, vineyard or distributor to speak on the wines chosen and the pairings. The Makena Beach & Golf Resort introduced its new Winery of the Month series in January 2013 featuring Cakebread Cellars with special guest Dennis Cakebread. Other wineries featured include Duckhorn, Craggy Range, Banfi Vitners, Miner Valley, Cade, Rombauer, Paradigm, Silver Oak, Joel Gott and Alexander Valley Vineyards to name a few.  Event prices ranges from  at $100 - $150 per person, plus tax and gratuity.

Liquid Chef Cocktail Series

Makena Beach & Golf Resort’s newest event series occurs monthly at the Molokini Bar & Grille and features a different spirit and master mixologist each month. Focusing on bartending techniques that can be utilized at home using various top shelf spirits, each event will feature drink demonstrations by the master mixologist and a representative from the chosen spirit. Guests will get the chance to sample 3-5 cocktails at each event. Specialty appetizer pairings prepared by the resort’s culinary staff will also be provided. Past event themes and spirits include: Casamigos Tequila, Ocean Vodka, Juniper Berries & Everything Gin, Whiskey and Bourbon, Sammy’s Beach Bar Rum.  Past Master Mixologists in attendance includes Chandra Lucariello  and Jeoy Gottesman. Event usually priced $60 per person, plus tax and gratuity.

Liquid Chef Series with Pau Maui Vodka

The Makena Beach & Golf Resort continues it Liquid Chef Series this July, partnering again with Young’s Market Company Hawaii to present Pau Maui Vodka. On Saturday July 26th, 2014 at 6:30 PM at the Molokini Bar & Grille, Master Mixologist Joey Gottesman presents several signature cocktails made with the locally made Pau Maui Vodka and paired with signature appetizers by Makena’s chefs.

The Journey

This Hand-Crafted Original Sour is hand-crafted with Maui’s Own, Pau Vodka, bruised to perfection with fresh pressed lemon juice, white cane sugar and pasteurized egg whites, served up with a dash of aromatic Peychaud’s Bitters and a fresh expressed swath of orange in a Sea Salt and Fresh Ground Pink Pepper Corn Rimmed Martini Glass.

The Nigbur Collins

Named after Master Distiller Mark Nigbur, this Collins is a botanical and fresh masterpiece, painstakingly measured over the rocks with Pau Vodka, in a mélange of fresh lemon sour and Martini and Rossi Bianco, capped with seltzer and served with a fresh slice of Maui Gold Pineapple and Peychaud’s Bitters.

Pau’s “Red Dirt Flirt”

This Sophisticated Dirty Martini, is Blessed with the fresh island Mana that is embodied by Maui’s Own Pau Vodka, stirred with the savory brine of Kalamata Olive Juice and kissed with the botanicals and off-dry complexity of Martini and Rossi Bianco, strained up with an aromatic and decadent combination of Feta Cheese Stuffed Kalamata Olives and House made Red Hawaiian Chili Pepper Oil.

Malahini Mojo

From Kama’aina to Malahini, this elixir is inspired by our Thai Nigburs to the East, created with Pau Vodka, Craft Coconut Cream and fresh resort grown basil, bound in pineapple and served frothy and on the rocks with freshly pressed lime and aromatic basil top.

Join Chef Kurt Lesmerises as he prepares a summer inspired five course meal paired with the handcrafted wines from California and Oregon.
