Maken Growing Bigger Each Day
Officially named P. Makena Vom Younghaus, the resort's resident K-9 is a authentic pure breed German Shepherd and was born on October 12, 2011. A member of the Makena Ohana since December 2011, Makena graces the halls of resort as a goodwill ambassador and is a prominent fixture in the resort's daily life. She greets the many resort guests on her daily walks around the property and serves as a mascot to the resort staff. Constantly smiling and full of energy, Makena provides another reason for solidarity between the resort ohana. Known for their strength, intelligence and loyal nature, this German Shepherd is a welcome addition to the resort family. Be sure to say Aloha to her on your next visit to the resort.
Welcome to the official blog of Makena, the Makena Beach & Golf Resort's K-9 Ambassador.
Check out what Makena has been up to this week!
Friday, February 15, 2013 - Run Along
A New Style of Walking the Dog
Makena grows bigger and stronger each day. At 70 pounds, it has become hard for her caretakers to provide the necessary long and rigorous walks to keep her growing strong. Fortunately, as a golf resort we have ample golf carts available to help aid in the task of walking Makena around and throughout the resort property. Here are photos of our tag along on her runs along our golf carts.
Thursday, February 14, 2013 - Be My Valentine
Makena Wants You To Be Her Valentines
For Valentine's Day Makena recieves a cute snuggly gift from her Makena Ohana. In the picture to the right Makena takes a photo with her newest favorite toy. She is so cute and cuddly in this photo, the image was features on the resort's Facebook Happy Valentine's Message below.
Tuesday, January 1, 2013 - The Morning After
The Morning After New Year's Eve
The morning after New Year's Eve produces a very tired Makena. After a night of great treats like doggy biscuits, Beggin' Strips and firework excitement, here she is cuddling up to her deer Christmas present. Isn't she cute.
Tuesday, January 2, 2013 - An Even More Active New Year
It's the New Year and that means New Year's resolutions to stay fit and work out. Here is the Makena Beach & Golf Resort K-9 ambassador getting into the New Year's stay fit groove as she exercises on the treadmill!
Happy 1st Birthday Makena!
We can't believe Makena turns a year old on October 12, 2012. In celebration of the resorts K-9 Ambassador we have included pictures of Makena when she first arrived a year ago.
Help us celebrate her birthday by wishing her a big Happy Birthday on our Facebook Page!
Makena Arrives And First Month
Makena frist arrives to the Makena Beach & Golf Resort as Pearl Vom Youghaus less than 3 months old.
Then a small puppy, Makena was smaller than the ceramic pots for our potted plants in our offices
The ever photogenic puppy, Makena smiles for the camera, a foreshadowing of the ever excited and playful older puppy we have come to know.
August 7, 2012 - Makena Fetch Action Shot
As a growing puppy, Makena spends quite a bit of the day on walks and afternoon games of fetch. Running faster than most of the people on staff, Makena can run pace with employees riding on golf carts. Full of energy, Makena finds the best way to past the time as a resort ambassador with playing fetch with her many resort handlers. As seen here in a terrific action shot, Makena runs back after successfully "fetching" a Kiawe wood stick. Good job girl, no doubt she received a doggy treat after this run.
TUESDAY JULY 25, 2012 - MORNING WALK ON THE BEACH
MORNING WALK ON THE BEACH
With a backyard as beautiful as Maluaka Beach, nothing beats a morning walk in Makena. Here is a photo of Makena's getting a great start to the morning by getting her paws wet in the warm Pacific Ocean while sinking in the sugar like white sand of the Makena Beach & Golf Resort's majestic backyard. The result is a photo that's instagram worthy and a very happy dog.
Monday July 9, 2012 - PHOTO-SHOOTING ON THE GREEN
PHOTO - SHOOTING ON THE GREEN
A photo taking pro, Makena spent some time at the South 16th Fairway this morning getting some photos for an annual puppy dog calendar. With her beautiful fur brushed and her poses practiced, Makena wows her caretakers by being well-behaved and extra photogenic. Here is a photo from Makena's morning shoot.
Wednesday, June 20, 2012 - OH MY! HOW YOU'VE GROWN
OH MY! HOW YOU'VE GROWN
Makena grows bigger and taller everyday! We remember when she was a tiny little thing hiding under our employee desk areas and light enough to carry in your arms like a baby. Here is a current photo of Makena standing on her hind legs watching one or engineering directors walk away from her day home in our General Manager's office.
Sunday, June 10, 2012 - Summer Camp Fun
MAKENA GOES TO SUMMER CAMP!
It's been quiet the last couple days at Makena, without our resident K-9 gracing the halls of the resort. But no matter how much we miss her, we are comforted by the fact she is having so much fun with other dogs her age at Ohana Pet Training center on Maui. This doggy summer camp gives Makena much needed exposure to other dogs her age. Still a young puppy (though a very large puppy), the camp also gives Makena some developmental training as the resort's ambassador. Here are some photos of Makena running around, relaxing, and just a having a great time with her new pals!

Wednesday June 6, 2012 - Golf Course Demolition
Golf Course Demolition
Makena proves that she is the queen of the Makena Golf Course and specializes in her own form of golf course maintenance, or perhaps she just thought that the tee marker whale tail was just a large bone. Take a look at Makena's morning shenanigans on her daily walk on Makena's 18-hole golf course.
Monday June 3, 2012 - Case Of The Mondays
CASE OF THE MONDAYS
It's another sunny Monday in South Maui but for some reason Makena seems to have a case of the Mondays. Here's a photo of Makena on Maluaka Beach louging in the sand on Monday morning. Come on Makena, lets go for a hearty run!
Monday May 28, 2012 - Memorial Day Beach Fun
Makena gets all sandy
MEMORIAL DAY BEACH FUN
A day of remembrance and a day to spend with loved ones in bright and happy settings, Makena spends an eventful morning getting all sandy on the shores of Maluaka Beach. Like a born and raised Hawaiian, Makena loves the water, sand and surf. Now if only it was easy to get all the sand off her, when it's time to head back to the hotel...
Tuesday May 15, 2012 - TURF EATER
In the mornings, our Golf Course Superintendent Bryan takes Makena on her early morning walks on our 18-hole golf course. Of all the grass on the property, it is this spongy well manicured piece of lawn that she loves to dig and try to eat. It's a good thing our golf course turf specialist is there to help patch up the work of Makena's favorite morning passtime. Here's a photo of Makena's latest turf adventure. Perhap's she can sense coins or gold beneath the blanket of green. Now wouldn't that be something!
Thursday May 10, 2012 - I"M A NUT
I'm a Nut
On Makena's daily walks, we have found she loves to play fetch with the small coconuts that fall from the many palms on property. She loves them so much, she tends to collect them in her mouth, fitting as much as 4 of them at a time. Getting her to give up her loot of coconuts is the hard part when talking her on her daily walks. Here are some photos of her late afternoon walk today.
Tuesday May 8, 2012 - “Who Let The Doggy Ducks Out?”
“Who Let the Doggy Ducks Out?”
Makena is Grand Marshal of our Annual Employee Duck Race
Each year the employees of the Makena Beach & Golf Resort gather to watch 500 rubber ducks make the treacherous and rocky journey down the waterfall and down the meandering streams of the resort's atrium garden. Of these ducks, some of them make it down, while others are lost into the dark crevices of the cascade, only to pop up weeks later. The lucky ducks are the one of the first 25 that make it past the finish line, winning their employee benefactors a prize and, best of all, bragging rights til the following year. Why you may ask should Makena engage in such a ritual? We do it for charity of course!
Every year the Makena Beach & Golf Resort participates in the annual Hawaii Lodging Association Maui Charity Walk. Our biggest fundraiser for the Charity Walk is our annual Duck Race, where employee buys ducks to place into the employee race. This year’s theme is inspired by our very own canine ambassador, Makena. This year’s ducks have the familiar snouts and floppy ears of our beloved K-9. In honor of her doggy swaggar, Makena was named the Grand Marshal of the race.
With her developing bark as our cue to start the annual race, the ducks go down the waterfall. A fan of chasing ducks, Makena did a great job of mingling with staff and, thankfully, not jumping into the koi ponds to join the race. Good Job girl! Check out some pictures of the day’s festivities.
Thursday May 3, 2012 - Reunited And It Feels So Good
Reunited and it Feels So Good
Makena is reunited with her first family. Breeders Laurel Young and Lani Smithson are the owners and operators of Vom Younghaus German Shepherd Hawaii. Makena instantly recognized their familiar smells, bounding toward them as she reached the lobby. Here she takes a picture with Jeannine, Executive Assistant to the General Manager [far left] and both Laurel and Lani. Smile Makena!
