Makena Golf Course - Tips From Our Pro
Tips for driving it longer and straighter from our Pros
Makena Head Golf Professional Eliot Gouveia, tells us how to create distance with modern drivers.
Most amateurs lose distance because they are not using their drivers the way they are meant to be hit. The modern drivers and balls are built a little different then in the the past. It used to be you could tee the ball down and hit it with a low trajectory and get a lot of roll. You can still do that when needed, but the newer clubs and balls perform better with a higher launch angle. With the higher launch angle the golf ball has less backspin which gives you added carry; it also has less sidespin which helps the ball go straighter.
So how to we improve our launch angle?
-
We tee the ball the higher. At least half of the ball should be above the club when the ball is teed up. I like to use the longer tees.
-
Make sure the ball is lined up off you left heel. If the ball is too far back in your stance you will hit it with a descending blow, ideal for your irons, but not for your driver. We want to hit the driver on the upswing.
-
Keep your head behind the ball. This will ensure that the bottom of your swing is before impact. Again, this wil make it possible for you to carch the ball on the upswing.
You can use these tips to hit it further and straighter, and the great news is you don't have to swing harder.
